The Gold Maple Leaf coin was first produced by the Royal Canadian Mint in 1979. Gold Maple Leafs produced between 1979 and 1982 were minted to .999 fineness. From 1983 until present day, the coins were minted to .9999 fineness. Although the original Gold Maple Leafs do not enjoy the additional purity, they do share the same $50 face value denomination and international reputation for quality and liquidity as their present day decedents.
